Letter to Dean Anderson, Berklee, when Alan Dawson passed on...
6/2/96
Dean, This is a letter to add and convey my thoughts and great appreciation for Alan Dawson.
When I first got to Berklee in 1973, my principal drum teacher was Dave Vose. I tried my best
to get in the very long line to study with Alan but to no avail. After becoming acquainted with
several of the drummers that were studying with Alan, I knew I must get with him! My fortune
had come -- I finally got to study with Alan Dawson!
A part of me would have been satisfied just to hear the stories from a legend or just to watch
and hear him play. Then he introduced me to Ted Reed’s syncopation book. That changed
my life. Alan’s teaching technique showed me chart reading, confidence, song sense and
most of all, groove. What Alan Dawson did for music is unrivaled.
What Alan Dawson did for drummers is Godly.
There will be no other like him and I shall miss him greatly.
Sincerely,
John Robinson
