KING OF THE GROOVE by Grammy winner, John JR Robinson brings us the behind-closed-doors stories as he reveals how a five-year-old, small-town boy just knew he would be playing (all over the world) along-side the living legends of the music industry for his entire career. His groove played a part in over 50 Grammy winning songs, over 200 US Billboard Hot 100 songs as well as more than ½ billion units sold, earning him a permanent spot in Rolling Stone Magazine’s, “The Top 100 Drummers of All Time” list.

“In the five decades we have worked together, JR knows how to get to where I want the beat to go almost symbiotically. He was an important component of the Q Posse.
He is rock solid, and he is family.”

- Quincy Jones, 28-time Grammy winner, EGOT winner

JR gracefully uses his quick wit with his entertaining personality to share lessons of struggle, triumph and the power of believing in yourself to make your dreams come alive. His musicianship has helped define the pop, R&B and Jazz era for the last half century, making him one of the most recorded drummers in history. No one will forget JR’s landmark “drum fill” which opens the iconic song, “Rock With You,” (from Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall) which is and will always be an essential piece of pop music lore. From stories of the making of one of the highest grossing songs of all time, “We Are the World”, to the first time he met Quincy Jones, (who provides the foreword), to touring with Peter Frampton, working with Usher, Daft Punk, a heart-breaking story with Barbra Streisand, plus 60 more A-list musicians and producers’ stories. King of the Groove is a highly enlightening book that will delight and inform musicians, music fans and entrepreneurs alike. A tour de force experience from beginning to end.

JR has done it All -amazing musician and drummer. Drummers are the unsung heroes behind the scenes, often not recognized by the general public. But did you know there’s a group of elite drummers who are part of the hit-making machine? JR is one of them. As I delved deeper into this book, I realized that JR was the drummer on most of my favorite songs. The stories behind his career, the people he worked with, and the unique insights he shared made this book an absolute must-read. As a drummer myself, I’ve read over twenty biographies of drummers, and I can confidently say that this book stands out as the best of them all. It’s not only informative but also incredibly interesting. Thanks a bunch, JR, for sharing your incredible journey and stories with us.

John Robinson is not only an incredible drummer, but he is also an incredible human. His book is very very inspiring and not just musically but how to be a good person and how to prepare for certain things in life and how to deal with things. I grew up reading the names at the back of albums and CDs, and I recognized all of the names in the book! That was really a treat for me! I’m probably gonna read it again in a few months!

The significance of a career that’s spanned decades can never be overstated or the impact you’ve had during your tenure as a great in American music. That’s a space occupied by a select few in history. When music students of today learn history, they’ll find your name. That’s what passion, hard work, character, talent and determination does to carve a path like yours.

There are many great drummers. Not one of them with quite the signature you have on time, feel, presence and sheer power of groove intent. That’s why you got called.

The intro to High Life or Rock with you gets played by working drummers during a warm up- That lets you know how deep your effect on anyone who plays drums has been, and continues to be. That’s tribute to greatness

I found John’s book fascinating, entertaining and incredibly well written. I was drawn in by his story telling about his experiences in the music industry over the past 50 years. I couldn’t put it down!

I would consider this book to be an encyclopedia of the last 50 years of the music industry. John’s book is a Bible on how to be a true professional drummer or a musician of any kind.

I met John in 1971 in Creston, Iowa and am one of his biggest fans! I learned to play the kit from John and have seen him play live 6 times with artists such as Glenn Frey, David Foster and his new band SRT. He is always spot on, his groove is unmistakable and defines what being in the pocket truly means!

I consider John to be my teacher, mentor and am honored to call him my friend! This book is an incredible read for anyone who loves music and or creates music.
